During an interview on NewsNation’s ‘Elizabeth Vargas Reports,’ Ramsey County, MN Sheriff Bob Fletcher issued a stark warning about the growing Somali gang problem in the region. Fletcher emphasized that without immediate action, the county could face a long-term legacy similar to what some European countries are currently experiencing.
Warning of Long-Term Consequences
Fletcher stated, ‘It’s a growing problem. … We better work our butts off right now to fix this problem in the Somali community, or we are going to launch into a 200-year legacy that won’t be unlike what some of the European countries are seeing.’ His comments highlight the urgency of addressing the issue before it spirals into a long-term crisis.
Focus on Leadership and Enforcement
Fletcher also outlined his strategy for dealing with the situation, identifying 300 troublemakers among the 100,000 Somali residents in the area. He noted that while this is a small number, 50 of them are considered the leadership of the gangs, as they are the ones carrying out violent acts such as shootings. He called for these individuals to be charged federally under RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) and emphasized the need for collaboration with federal authorities to gather enough evidence for such charges.
‘We are working with the feds. We need to establish enough information. One of the great parts of this unit is they can put together information that allows us to charge people with racketeering,’ Fletcher explained. He added that the remaining 50 should be dealt with at the county level through local law enforcement efforts.
Call for Regional Task Force
Fletcher stressed the importance of a regional law enforcement effort, urging the creation of a regional task force to address the issue comprehensively. ‘We need a law enforcement effort that is regional in nature. We need a regional task force,’ he said, underscoring the need for a coordinated approach to tackle the problem effectively.
The sheriff’s comments reflect a broader concern about the impact of gang activity on public safety and the potential for long-term instability if the issue is not addressed promptly. His call for federal and local collaboration highlights the complexity of the situation and the need for a multifaceted response.
