Another devastating flash flood has struck Nepal, destroying a bridge and wiping out homes in the north central region. At least five people are missing following the disaster, which was triggered by a landslide that blocked the Budhi Gandaki river.
Landslide Causes Catastrophic Flood
The landslide formed a temporary dam, which later broke, unleashing a powerful flood that swept through the area. Residents along the river were evacuated on Sunday as the floodwaters damaged homes, infrastructure, and even a hydropower plant construction site.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority coordinated the evacuation efforts and issued warnings to residents to move to safer areas. Despite the warnings, the flood caused significant damage, including the destruction of four bridges and the loss of around 30 homes.
Rescue Operations Underway
Nepal’s army has launched rescue operations, using helicopters and ground troops to reach stranded individuals. By Sunday afternoon, 49 people had been rescued, but the search for missing persons continues.
Power and communication towers along the riverside were also damaged, complicating rescue and recovery efforts. The flood has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Nepal’s mountainous regions to sudden, extreme weather events.
Historical Context of Catastrophic Floods
Earlier this year, a massive flood triggered by a glacier collapse near Langtang Lirung along the Nepal-China border resulted in over 1,500 deaths and left more than 5,000 people missing. The flood damaged over 7,500 homes and displaced tens of thousands of residents, underscoring the long-term impact of such disasters.
As Nepal continues to recover from this latest flood, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents and improving early warning systems to mitigate the effects of future disasters.
