Ben-Gvir’s Extremist Rhetoric and Violent Proposals
Ben-Gvir has a history of using extremist language to justify Israel’s military actions, including the destruction of Gaza following the October 7 attacks. During a press conference, he claimed that Israeli soldiers should be authorized to shoot at anyone throwing stones or Molot, a stance that has drawn international condemnation. In June, he openly called for the genocide of Lebanon, stating, ‘All of Lebanon must burn,’ a statement that has been widely criticized as incitement.
Violent Proposals and Controversial Statements
In an August podcast, Ben-Gvir suggested killing dozens of Palestinians every night, claiming they are not human and therefore deserve to die. He also praised Meir Kahane, a banned racist party leader, and displayed the portrait of Baruch Goldstein, a murderer of Palestinian worshippers. His remarks have led to calls for his removal from public office.
Netanyahu’s Political Strategy
As Netanyahu seeks to unify right-wing parties and smaller factions, including Ben-Gvir’s Jewish Power party, he may offer the defense minister position to secure his coalition’s chances of victory in the upcoming elections. Despite opposition from Ben-Gvir so far, the PM could sway him with a promise of the powerful defense role, which could further destabilize the region and raise international concerns.
