Israel retaliates against Netherlands’ trade ban on biblical goods, targeting diplomats and customs inspections.

Israel has retaliated against the Netherlands after the country banned travelers from bringing items from the Biblical heartlands of Judea and Samaria, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. The move has led to the revocation of Dutch diplomats’ credentials in Ramallah, with the Israeli government giving them seven days to hand over their documents and leave the region.
Israel Condemns Netherlands’ Anti-Israel Policies
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned the Netherlands’ actions, stating that Israel will not allow hostile measures against it to go unanswered. Sa’ar emphasized that the Netherlands’ anti-Israel policies are fueling antisemitism and incitement, which are not being adequately addressed by the Dutch government.
Customs Inspections Target Israel-Related Goods
Following the new trade bans, Dutch customs officers began conducting targeted inspections on travelers arriving on El Al flights from Tel Aviv. Eyewitnesses reported that passengers were singled out, forced into separate lines, and subjected to secondary inspections for items like wine, dates, or olives. Some travelers questioned the sudden scrutiny, only to be met with aggressive remarks from airport officials.
Historical Sensitivities and Holocaust Survivors’ Fear
The customs inspections have rekindled painful memories for Holocaust survivors, many of whom fear they are being targeted again. One 82-year-old traveler shared that the experience reminded him of his time in hiding during World War II, when Jews were set apart and persecuted. The Netherlands, which saw the highest proportion of Jews murdered in Western Europe during WWII, has a dark history of complicity in the Holocaust.
Israel Sends a Clear Message to Nations Targeting It
Jerusalem has sent a clear message to nations that target Israel: such countries will no longer enjoy diplomatic privileges on Israeli soil. The Dutch government’s actions have not only sparked diplomatic tensions but have also reignited debates over the role of antisemitism and international relations in the region.
