A powerful nor’easter has continued to flood coastal communities across the Northeast, with New Jersey to New England experiencing widespread damage and disruption. The storm, which has already pummeled the region for a second day, has left tens of millions of residents battling coastal flooding, power outages, and travel chaos.

Tidal surges have swamped low-lying neighborhoods in New Jersey, while wind gusts have toppled trees on New York’s Long Island, damaging homes and felling utility poles. States of emergency have been declared in New York and New Jersey as the storm’s impact continues.

Residents Face Repeated Flooding

Residents in affected areas have described the flooding as a recurring issue, with some neighborhoods experiencing water levels reaching up to a foot. Caroline Virenius, whose garage was flooded, noted, “It’s not like a one-time occurrence. It’s getting wet again and again.”

Extreme rainfall, with some areas in New Jersey receiving over 4 inches of rain since Friday, combined with surging ocean levels, has led to flooding not seen in nearly a decade in many parts of the region. The National Weather Service predicts the storm will gradually weaken, but heavy rain and strong winds are expected to continue in parts of New England and the mid-Atlantic.

Power Outages and Safety Concerns

Over 100,000 customers across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic have been without power at times on Sunday, with the most widespread outages along the coast from New Jersey to Connecticut. Local officials have also warned that high tide late Monday could bring more flooding, urging residents to remain cautious.

In Brooklyn, a man was killed by a falling tree, highlighting the dangers posed by the storm. New York’s Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman warned of another band of the storm expected to hit early this afternoon and later into the evening.
