A New York City woman reportedly vomited after a former acquaintance who stabbed her 22 times in her Bronx apartment last year was sentenced to only eight and a half years in prison. The victim, Kaitlynn Berman, said that the former acquaintance, 23-year-old Christopher Joseph, pulled out a knife and stabbed her over 20 times in front of her 3-year-old daughter after she tried to get him to leave her apartment, according to local station WNBC-TV.
Crime and Aftermath
Joseph also stole Berman’s cellphone and almost $6,000 in cash, the station reported. He was arrested the day after the attack and charged with attempted murder. She, meanwhile, spent a month and a half in the hospital.

Despite the severity of the crime, Joseph was allowed by the blue state of New York to accept a plea deal for an eight-year sentence, with five years of post-release supervision.
Victim’s Reaction
According to Berman’s adviser, Bishop Boyde Singletary, she was devastated by the sentence.
“We are not satisfied. She is not satisfied, so overwhelmed that she threw up,” Singletary told WNBC. “The woman has PTSD, she has nerve damage on both right hand and left hand, she has pain and trauma from the right side of her face. Her life is never the same.”
“This man, this monster, Christopher Joseph, should be doing 22 years to life – one year for each stabbing. No remorse, no anything,” the bishop added.
Support and Appeals
Victim advocate Buslim Maine also spoke out on Berman’s behalf.
“This young lady is falling out, she can’t take the trauma that she’s still going through right now,” Maine said.
Berman reportedly plans to appeal the sentence and reach out to the Bronx District Attorney.
Details of the Attack
During a prior interview with cable station News12, Berman provided further details about how the attack had played out.
According to the station, Berman had been cat-sitting for a longtime friend when the friend’s “partner” came to pick up the cat, but immediately started acting strange.
“When he first came into my apartment, he asked me if he could talk to me and put my daughter in the room,” Berman told the station.
“He said to me that his child’s mother gave him permission to have intercourse with me,” she added. “And I had told him no.”
Joseph then “seemingly acted normal after the strange interaction,” according to the station, except that he wouldn’t leave.
“He did ask me what was the most traumatizing thing that ever happened to me,” Berman said. “And then he had asked me for juice. I turned around to get juice, and that’s where he started attacking me.”
She was reportedly stabbed in the face, neck, back, and hands.
“I was able to break the first knife that he brought with him, and then he wound up taking one of my own kitchen knives,” Berman said.

Berman told him he could take whatever he wanted, but he didn’t seem to care.
“He shouted to me that it wasn’t about the money,” she explained. “And then he kind of just kicked me in the back of the head and walked out the front door, taking my cell phone and money, so I couldn’t call for help.”
Afterward, Berman spent 48 days in a local hospital and had to have multiple surgeries.
