Attorneys for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) have demanded that federal prosecutors immediately return all property seized from her home during an ongoing criminal investigation. The search, conducted by agents from the Department of Homeland Security on Monday, included personal items such as her cellphone, notebooks, personal computers, and passport.
Legal Challenges and Constitutional Concerns
Omar’s legal team argued that the search was politically motivated and violated her constitutional rights. In a letter to the Justice Department, they stated there is no legitimate basis for suggesting she has violated any law related to her citizenship status.
They also claimed the investigation was deliberately timed for the final weeks before the midterms, when voters will decide whether Omar serves a fifth term. Omar’s lawyers assert that the Justice Department’s practices discourage overt investigative steps against a candidate in the 60 days before an election, which they say was violated.
Possible Charges and Financial Disclosures
The scope of the investigation remains unclear, but the Daily Wire outlined five potential crimes. These include allegations that Omar’s father committed immigration fraud when seeking refugee status, and questions about whether he became a citizen while Omar was under 18.
Other allegations involve Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, potentially using her position to benefit his firm’s African clients through legislation, along with scrutiny of his businesses and the couple’s financial disclosures. A 2025 filing valued their assets at up to $30 million, while an amended filing this year reported a net worth of roughly $18,000 to $95,000.
Omar’s Response and Political Stand
Omar thanked her supporters and constituents who have stood by her, calling the investigation a “scary journey” but reaffirming her commitment to her work. She stated that Trump and his administration have been targeting her since she arrived in Congress and that she will continue to stand up to him.
