Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has enlisted two veteran Washington litigators with deep ties to Democratic legal fights against President Donald Trump as federal prosecutors investigate her immigration history. Omar is represented by Amy Jeffress and Joshua Matz, both partners at Hecker Fink, according to the New York Post. Jeffress became former President Joe Biden’s personal attorney in 2025, replacing Bob Bauer. She previously represented former FBI lawyer Lisa Page, whose anti-Trump text messages with agent Peter Strzok became a flashpoint in the Russia investigation, and did outside counsel work for the House January 6 committee.

Matz served as counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during both of Trump’s impeachments and has represented Brown, Columbia and New York universities in litigation against the administration. Neither lawyer’s practice centers on immigration law; both focus on constitutional disputes and government investigations.

Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington home on October 12, seizing her phone, passport, computers and notebooks, according to The Wall Street Journal. Investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father misstated her age on naturalization paperwork, along with long-running allegations that her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was a marriage to her brother. A Justice Department filing tied to the search lists Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” without explanation, the Daily Wire previously reported.

On October 16, Jeffress and Matz sent the Justice Department a letter demanding the return of all seized property and accusing the agents of ignoring a magistrate judge’s search protocols.

“This vindictive, retributive, and politically motivated criminal investigation into one of the President’s chief congressional critics violates Representative Omar’s constitutional rights and threatens the separation of powers,” they wrote.

Omar posted a video Tuesday begging supporters to chip in for her legal defense. Her campaign filing showed no payments to Hecker Fink or either lawyers as of the October 15 deadline, according to the Post.

Trump on Thursday called on Omar to resign immediately. Border czar Tom Homan has said she could face denaturalization and deportation in fraud is proven.
