A Philadelphia teacher and activist has admitted to fabricating her identity as Palestinian and Tunisian, revealing she is actually a white woman of Jewish heritage. Hannah Gann, a teacher at the Workshop School, confessed to lying about her background after being confronted by members of two activist organizations.
Admitting to Deception
Gann, who had been actively involved in Racial Justice Philly and Philly Educators for Palestine, publicly acknowledged her deception in an Instagram video. In the video, she stated, “I hid the truth or outright lied about my background to everyone in my life.” She had previously identified herself as Palestinian American in a 2024 biography for a West Philadelphia teach-in on the destruction of educational infrastructure in Gaza.
Activist Groups Cut Ties
After a meeting with members of the Racial Justice Organizing Committee and Philly Educators for Palestine, Gann admitted to lying about her identity. The groups subsequently cut ties with her, citing the inappropriate appropriation of Black and Palestinian identities. “Black and Palestinian identities, grief, and genocide are not identities or experiences that anyone has the right to appropriate for credibility, access, or belonging,” Racial Justice Philly stated.
Contrasting Past and Present
Gann’s case has drawn comparisons to Rachel Dolezal, the former NAACP chapter president who faced public scrutiny over her racial identity in 2015. Like Dolezal, Gann has been accused of fabricating her heritage to gain credibility in activist circles. Gann’s activism extended beyond social media, including participation in pro-Palestinian organizing efforts and teach-ins.
Community Reactions
Sharif El-Mekki, a Philadelphia educator and founder of the Center for Black Educator Development, emphasized the importance of honesty in activism. “But honesty is the price of entry,” he wrote in a social media post. The Philadelphia School District acknowledged the situation and is providing support to students and staff at the Workshop School, though no disciplinary action has been publicly announced.
