Indian pilot Smit Machchhar, who was stabbed by his co-pilot during an attempted terror attack on a Flydubai flight to Israel, played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew. The incident, which unfolded on Wednesday, saw Machchhar fight back against his attacker as the aircraft plummeted thousands of feet before landing safely in Saudi Arabia.
Heroic Actions Save Lives
According to reports, the co-pilot, an Omani national, allegedly stabbed Machchhar and attempted to seize control of the Boeing 737 MAX 8. Despite his injuries, Machchhar continued to fight for control of the cockpit, alerting passengers and crew to the unfolding danger. His actions were instrumental in prompting passengers to breach the flight deck and subdue the co-pilot.
Flight-tracking data revealed the plane was descending rapidly during the confrontation, dropping roughly 17,000 feet in under two minutes. Israeli officials have confirmed the incident was an attempted terror attack, with the co-pilot allegedly trying to take control of the aircraft.
Passengers and Pilots Collaborate to Secure the Cockpit
Passengers on board played a critical role in the incident, helping to overpower the co-pilot. One passenger described how the group ‘jumped on the pilot with force’ and tied him up using headphones. Another passenger recounted how several individuals rushed into the cockpit and pulled the attacker away.
With Machchhar incapacitated, two off-duty pilots, who were originally meant to take over for the next flight, took control of the aircraft. These pilots, one British and the other unknown, managed to land the plane safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. All passengers and crew survived the incident.

Flydubai has confirmed the flight experienced an in-flight incident and landed safely, with all passengers accounted for. The airline has not yet released the identities of the pilots involved or confirmed the stabbing incident, stating that the circumstances and motives remain under investigation.
