Pro-Tibetan activists gathered in Washington, DC, to peacefully protest against Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit. The demonstration, which included participants from various oppressed groups, faced a confrontation with pro-Communist agitators. Protest organizers anticipated over 2,000 Tibetans living in North America, alongside Uyghurs, Southern Mongolians, Hong Kongers, Taiwanese, and Chinese pro-democracy activists, to participate in the event.
Scheduled Events and Demands
The planned activities included a march through Washington, demonstrations at the Chinese embassy, a rally near Capitol Hill, and a candlelight vigil in Franklin Park. Some protesters urged President Donald Trump to address China’s human rights violations during their meeting and to press Xi for better treatment of groups like the Uyghurs and Tibetans. Others called on Xi to resign, with some demonstrators mocking him by dressing in Winnie-the-Pooh costumes, a reference to Xi’s past ban on the character after critics compared his physique to the cartoon bear.
Confrontation and Counter-Demonstrations
The confrontation occurred as anti-Xi protesters lined up along a bridge to wave flags and banners while Xi’s motorcade passed beneath them. Counter-demonstrators attempted to steal flags, smash banners, and drown out the anti-Xi protesters by shouting over them. The Straits Times noted a significant number of Chinese nationals in the U.S. traveled to Washington for Xi’s visit, making competing displays of support and criticism inevitable.
One pro-Xi visitor to Washington told the Straits Times, “I have an American green card now, but I’m Chinese, so, of course, I’m very excited to see Xi Da Da,” referring to Xi as “Daddy Xi.” Security officials worldwide are increasingly concerned about China’s transnational repression, which includes sending thugs to intimidate Chinese emigrants into silence. The most crude methods involve harassment of protesters who speak out against Xi and his regime.
