Latvian lawmakers began negotiations to form a new government on Sunday following a parliamentary election in which Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs’s four-party pro-Ukraine coalition secured 35% of the vote. The coalition, led by the centrist United List party, emerged as the dominant force in the fragmented political landscape.
Political Shift Amidst Regional Tensions
The election came amid heightened concerns about potential Russian aggression, with Latvia, like its Baltic neighbors, maintaining strong support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The country, which borders both Russia and Moscow-allied Belarus, remains a key player in NATO’s eastern flank.
A political crisis in May had previously destabilized the previous governing coalition, which had been under strain over several issues, including the handling of stray drones suspected of originating from Ukraine. The parliament, or Saeima, then approved the new coalition led by Kulbergs, marking a significant shift in Latvia’s political direction.
High Voter Turnout and Coalition Challenges
The election saw a voter turnout of over 51%, with nearly 1.56 million eligible voters choosing the 100 members of the single-chamber Saeima for a four-year term. The United List party is expected to secure 42 seats, but the formation of a new government will require a multiparty coalition.
Parties must achieve at least 5% of the vote to gain parliamentary seats, highlighting the need for cooperation among smaller parties to form a stable administration. The new government will face the challenge of balancing domestic priorities with continued support for Ukraine amid ongoing regional tensions.
Strategic Position in NATO and Beyond
Latvia’s strategic location and its strong alignment with NATO underscore its importance in the broader European security context. As Russia continues to assert influence in the region, Latvia’s political decisions will have significant implications for both regional stability and international relations.
