Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA) has accused his opponent, Henrico County Prosecutor Shannon Taylor, of being a ‘progressive prosecutor’ who has taken a lenient approach in handling serious crimes, including those involving child abusers and nursing home offenders. During an appearance on Breitbart News Daily, Wittman detailed several cases where he alleges Taylor has failed to hold criminals accountable.

Lenient Sentences for Child Abusers

Wittman described a case where a sexual offender who had committed nine felony counts of sexually assaulting children was charged only as a misdemeanor, akin to a traffic ticket. As a result, the individual received only one year in jail and was not required to register as a sexual offender. Wittman emphasized that this leniency puts children at risk of being abused again.

Abuse of Nursing Home Patients

Another example involved a nursing home worker who abused an 82-year-old Alzheimer’s patient. Despite evidence from multiple agencies, Taylor chose not to prosecute the case, and the individual was released back into the community. Six months later, the person went on to abuse more nursing home patients, according to Wittman.

Infant Abuse Case

Wittman also cited a case involving a neonatal intensive care nurse who abused eight premature infants, including breaking their bones. The nurse received only a three-year sentence, while Wittman argued that a 45-year sentence was warranted. He criticized the leniency, stating that the infants would live with lifelong injuries.

Assaults on Police Officers

Wittman further pointed out that Taylor reduced charges on 75% of felony assaults on police officers to misdemeanors, which he argues shows a lack of support for law enforcement and victims. He accused her of being sympathetic to criminals rather than standing on the side of citizens and victims in Henrico County.

Wittman’s comments reflect a broader criticism of progressive prosecutors, who he claims prioritize rehabilitation over punishment, often leading to reduced sentences for serious crimes. His remarks highlight the ongoing debate over criminal justice reform and the role of prosecutors in ensuring public safety.
