Riots erupted in Bilbao, Spain, on Monday evening as far-left activists staged protests to cancel a planned appearance by right-wing influencer Vito Quiles at the University of Deusto. The clashes, which saw 19 people arrested, involved vandalism, looting, and the destruction of street furniture, marking a new wave of unrest in the Basque region.
Protesters Demand Cancellation of Right-Wing Event
The protest was organized by leftist groups, including the Socialist Youth of the Basque Country, under the slogan ‘No to Fascism in the Basque Country!’ According to public broadcaster RTVE, the demonstration attracted around 2,000 participants, mostly students, who declared that Quiles was ‘NOT welcome’ at their campus and vowed to ‘not allow their hatred and intolerance to make their way among the youth.’
Quiles Claims ETA Involvement in Protests
Quiles, known for his confrontational journalism and campus speaking tours, accused the head of the Ertzaina police of warning him of a ‘very high’ risk of an incident, citing the involvement of former ETA members in organizing the protests. He stated that the event was canceled due to the threat to student safety, calling the protesters ‘terrorists’ and asserting that ‘ETA remains alive in the streets of Bilbao.’
Political Response to the Violence
The mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), condemned the violence, labeling the protesters ‘authentic fascists’ and expressing sympathy for those affected by the chaos. Meanwhile, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the Popular Party and frontrunner for Spain’s next prime minister, vowed to form a government that ensures ‘order and security’ for Spanish citizens.
Context of Recent Unrest
The riots in Bilbao followed similar violent demonstrations in Barcelona two nights earlier, where 128 people were arrested and businesses were looted. The incidents have sparked widespread condemnation from conservative politicians, who view the protests as attempts to ‘intimidate the violent left’ and disrupt public order.
