A second death is suspected in a mysterious lab incident in Siberia, raising concerns about a possible pneumonic plague outbreak, according to Russian media reports. The incident follows the death of a 28-year-old researcher at an anti-plague laboratory in the Irkutsk region, which has sparked international scrutiny and heightened border controls in neighboring Central Asian countries.
Unconfirmed Second Fatality Sparks Alarm
Russian media claims that another individual died at an Irkutsk-area hospital after contracting the same disease that killed laboratory technician Darya Shipilova. However, Russian authorities have not confirmed the second death as a plague fatality, and no independent evidence has been released to support the claim. Shipilova, who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, died under highly suspicious circumstances after allegedly breaking a test tube containing live bacteria.
Government Reassurances Fail to Quell Fears
Russia’s health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, has denied any laboratory accident involving dangerous microorganisms, stating that Shipilova died from “pneumonia of unknown etiology.” Despite these reassurances, over 200 people who had contact with Shipilova were initially placed under medical observation, and dozens of employees at the facility were isolated. Hospitals in the region also imposed quarantine restrictions.
Regional and International Response
Countries across Central Asia have ramped up health controls at border crossings as the situation unfolds. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan have implemented quarantine measures, with Uzbekistan also increasing readiness for highly infectious diseases. Meanwhile, the United States has called for greater transparency from Moscow, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio urging Russia to share more information on the matter.
Global Concerns and Ongoing Investigations
President Trump has also addressed the situation, calling the death of the Russian laboratory worker a serious concern and offering American assistance. The lack of confirmed information and the government’s refusal to release evidence have only fueled suspicion, with Russian media outlets reportedly deleting reports on the suspected outbreak.
