Surface-to-air missile and air defense systems have been deployed at Mar-a-Lago and Donald J. Trump International Airport in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to U.S. Secret Service officials. The move comes amid a reported ‘heightened threat environment,’ as the agency seeks to bolster security for former President Donald Trump.

The Secret Service stated that the military is providing anti-aircraft, anti-drone, and anti-missile systems ‘in support of our protective operations.’ Officials are also taking steps to permanently restrict the airspace over Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, citing the need for enhanced security measures.

Aviation expert and pilot Michael Leighton noted that the deployment is likely due to a credible threat. ‘Drone warfare has become a big thing, and the government, DoD, their biggest concern is that an enemy, domestic or foreign, would use a drone guided by our GPS signals,’ he explained. Leighton highlighted the speed advantage of ground-based systems, which can launch in seconds compared to the minutes it takes for an F-16 to intercept a target.

A Secret Service spokesperson confirmed the use of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command resources to deploy counter-unmanned aircraft system capabilities. ‘The U.S. Secret Service is operating in a heightened threat environment, and we continuously adapt our protective operations to incorporate cutting-edge tools, technology, and methods to safeguard our protectees,’ the statement said.

The deployment follows reports that U.S. officials are considering resuming military operations against Iran. Central Command Commander Admiral Brad Cooper and War Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly met with Trump at the White House, as the former president has hinted at a renewed campaign after the midterms.

Trump has also suggested potential attacks on Iran during his campaign rallies, referencing a ‘little Epic Fury’ as part of his strategy. These developments underscore the ongoing tensions and heightened security measures in place as the U.S. navigates complex geopolitical and domestic challenges.
