Spanish officials have revealed a harrowing account of a two-year-old child being thrown into the Atlantic Ocean by migrant traffickers during a perilous sea journey, according to a report by The Sun. Enrique Espinosa, head of Lanzarote’s Emergency Services Consortium, described the incident during a radio interview on the program ‘A Buena Hora,’ following a report of a gang rape on another boat that reached the island.
Child Thrown Overboard After Crying
Espinosa said the child was crying with his mother on a boat and was thrown into the water by traffickers who found the child’s cries annoying. ‘There are even more terrible things than that,’ Espinosa said. ‘On a boat, they threw a two-year-old child who was crying with his mother into the water. They are terrible things. When they start telling you things, you see that it borders on a lack of humanity. An end must be put to all this trafficking by mafias.’
Spanish National Police have not announced an arrest tied to the toddler’s death, though they have taken action in other related cases. The radio interview initially focused on a case from September 16, when a small boat bound for Lanzarote was intercepted. Spanish coast guard officials said the crossing resulted in 65 survivors reaching land, with three bodies recovered.
Sexual Assault and Arrests
A woman onboard told rescuers she had been sexually assaulted, likely in international waters, by several men. The woman was reportedly in serious condition. A witness from the same boat also reported seeing the assault. National Police in Arrecife arrested three men, aged 21, 25, and 30, though their names and nationalities were not released.
A police spokesman said, ‘Given her serious state of health, the necessary resources were activated to provide her with initial assistance, and she subsequently received specialized care as a victim at police premises.’
More Migrants Rescued, Deaths Reported
The Sun reports that more than 450 migrants have been rescued off the coast of Lanzarote in the past few days, according to officials. ‘Over a dozen people are believed to have died during the crossing,’ the report adds, highlighting the ongoing crisis of migrant trafficking and the dangers faced by those attempting to reach Europe.
