Senate Judiciary Committee’s Response
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley criticized the investigation, stating that the Biden administration used powerful law enforcement tools to monitor Republicans without regard for constitutional violations. Grassley released the documents as part of an ongoing inquiry into the FBI’s “Arctic Frost” investigation, which began in April 2022. This probe, along with others like “Project Coconut” and “Project Cranberry,” has ensnared hundreds of conservative individuals and entities.
Testimony and Concerns
During a recent Senate hearing, Grassley pressed Smith about the collection of donor data. Smith confirmed that financial information was obtained, citing the need to investigate potential crimes. However, Grassley noted that Smith did not include this data in his public report, raising concerns about transparency and privacy.
Broader Implications
The intrusion into the financial and personal information of these supporters may still pose risks to their privacy, as the Department of Justice and FBI continue to hold their data. Grassley also highlighted a perceived double standard, noting that the FBI did not conduct a thorough investigation into potential criminal activity related to donors to the Clinton Foundation and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
