Christa Pike, the first woman in Tennessee to receive a death sentence in 200 years, is requesting an all-women lethal injection team for her execution, citing trauma from past abuse. Pike, now 50, is scheduled to be executed on September 30, and her legal team is pushing for her request to be considered.

Request for All-Women Team

Pike’s attorneys claim that having men involved in her final moments could cause her distress due to her post-traumatic stress disorder, stemming from documented abuse by males during her childhood. The legal team has submitted a petition stating, ‘Christa was broken, not evil,’ emphasizing her traumatic past.

Background of the Crime

Pike was 18 when she was convicted of luring 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer to an isolated spot on the University of Tennessee campus in 1995. She and her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, tortured Slemmer to death, slashing her throat and engraving Satanic symbols on her body. Pike reportedly celebrated the killing the next day. Shipp, who was 17 at the time, was sentenced to life in prison.

Legal and Public Reaction

Despite her request, Pike’s legal team is also seeking clemency from Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, asking to commute her sentence to life without parole. The victim’s mother, May Martinez, dismissed the request as nonsense, stating, ‘She didn’t consider how my daughter felt — she’s just playing the system … It’s all bullcrap.’

Historical Context

Pike was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to death on March 30, 1996, making her one of the youngest women in U.S. history to receive a death sentence. Her case has drawn attention due to its rarity and the unique circumstances surrounding her request for an all-women execution team.
