After 43 years, a cold case in Texas has finally been solved, leading to the identification of a murder victim. The Texas Department of Public Safety (TX DPS) announced on Monday that Betty Jo Norris, who was 44 when she was killed, has been identified as the victim of a 1983 murder.

Discovery and Investigation

The victim was discovered in September 1983 by ranchers working cattle along Highway 36 in rural Hamilton County. The remains, found in female clothing, were determined to have been left at the location several months prior after suffering a single gunshot wound to the head.

Over the years, local authorities and the Texas Rangers made several attempts to identify the victim through statewide announcements and forensic reconstruction images. However, no leads were found, and DNA testing available as late as 2005 did not yield any results. The case went cold, with no progress made for over two decades.

Breakthrough and Identification

In 2024, the case received renewed attention, and an unknown male DNA sample was extracted from the clothing of the victim in 2025. Despite this, no definitive information about the victim or the male DNA was obtained. The remains were then submitted for testing through the DPS’ Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) program.

A breakthrough came in July 2026, leading investigators to relatives of the female victim living in Brazos and Bell counties. After locating a son in his 60s, a DNA sample was taken, and the mother, Betty Jo Norris, was identified as the victim. She was 44 years old at the time of her murder.

Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement is now working to identify the person who killed Betty Jo Norris. The case highlights the advancements in forensic science that have enabled the resolution of long-cold cases, offering hope to families of missing persons and providing closure to unresolved crimes.
