Staff Sergeant Sterling Matthias Shelton, a decorated member of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Special Operations Group (SOG), has passed away following a 15-month battle with aggressive brain cancer. Shelton died on October 8, 2026, after enduring a series of treatments and maintaining his commitment to family and duty until the end.
A Hero’s Fight Against Cancer
Shelton’s cancer was first detected in July 2025 when he suffered a heat stroke, which led to the discovery of a 6-centimeter brain tumor. Diagnosed with grade 4 astrocytoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, Shelton faced multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Despite the challenges, he remained determined to be with his wife, Raven, and their two children, Ember Joy and Tyler Vance.
Legacy of Service and Strength
Throughout his seven-year career with DPS, Shelton was known for his extraordinary strength, determination, and willingness to help others, both on and off duty. He served four years with the elite Special Operations Group (SRT-5), where his dedication to protecting the people of Texas was evident.
A Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
Shelton’s wife, Raven, walked closely with him through his final days, which he spent peacefully at home surrounded by family, friends, and his close-knit “Tribe 5” team. In a heartfelt post, Raven shared her emotions, stating, “It is the greatest privilege and honor to be your wife and to be the one to walk you to the other side.”
Community and Honors
The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) honored Shelton’s legacy, noting his commitment to duty and service. Shelton was also an avid runner, ultramarathoner, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt recipient, embodying the resilience and grit that defined his life.
Remembering a Devoted Guardian
Shelton is survived by his wife, Raven; daughter, Ember Joy; son, Tyler Vance; his parents, Blain and Stacie; and his siblings, Spencer, Summer, and Ciera. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors in Borger, Texas.
