Texas has opened the nation’s first detransition clinic, as part of a healthcare fraud settlement between Texas Children’s Hospital and the Texas Attorney General’s Office. The clinic, announced by Attorney General Ken Paxton, provides medical care and counseling for individuals seeking to reverse gender transition procedures.
Paxton, a Republican Senate nominee, stated that the clinic will offer care and support to victims of what he calls the ‘radical left’s gender ideology.’ The settlement, which includes a $10 million payment, also requires the hospital to amend its bylaws and build the clinic. The Attorney General’s Office had previously accused the hospital of billing Texas Medicaid for ‘unallowable and illegal ‘gender-transition’ interventions.’
Texas Children’s Hospital emphasized that the clinic will provide multidisciplinary services, including Endocrinology, Surgery, Primary Care, Fertility Counseling, Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work, and Speech Pathology. The clinic will be operational and fully funded by the hospital for its first five years, offering care at no cost to patients under age 21 and providing obstetric and gynecologic care for older adults.

Paxton’s investigation into the hospital began in 2023, following leaked documents that revealed the hospital had performed sex-change surgeries on still children, despite public statements indicating they had stopped. The clinic’s opening comes just one week before the highly contested Senate race between Paxton and Democratic nominee James Talarico, which is considered a toss-up by political analysts.
Talarico’s stance on child sex changes has come under scrutiny, with him stating he opposes ‘gender reassignment surgeries for minors’ on a recent podcast. However, he previously expressed support for ‘trans children’ in a 2021 appearance, highlighting the complexity of the issue.
