Tragedy struck a soccer field in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon when a 34-year-old woman drove a truck onto the playing area, resulting in the deaths of a child and an adult. Emergency dispatchers received calls around 3:25 p.m. Central time reporting a vehicle had crashed through a soccer game at the Stryker Sports Complex. Police, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene, where two individuals were pronounced dead.

Authorities Confirm Details of the Incident

Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses confirmed that the vehicle involved in the incident remained at the scene and that the driver was in custody. He emphasized there was no ongoing threat to the public from the driver. “Our officers along with law enforcement from the area, Wichita Fire Department, and Sedgwick County EMS responded to the scene,” Moses added.

Eleven other people were taken to area hospitals, with ten suffering traumatic injuries ranging from bruises to severe injuries. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. The injured included two 5-year-olds, two 8-year-olds, and a 9-year-old girl. Authorities believe the driver had a child playing soccer elsewhere at the complex. “We believe that she had a child who was playing soccer here today, but not on that field,” Moses said.

Investigation Underway

Moses noted that the investigation is focused on determining how the incident occurred and why. “We have a really good idea of what happened. What we’re working to do now is do the investigation to determine how it happened and why,” he explained. “We know people want the answers to those questions. We also need to determine the answer to those questions.”

Bystanders pulled the woman from the truck, and two children were reportedly in the backseat. Wichita police urged anyone with video from the incident to submit tips through its website. “We are seeking any video related to the tragic incident that occurred at the Stryker Sports Complex on October 17, 2026,” the police department said.

Statements from Officials

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly expressed her condolences to the victims and their families, stating, “I am very grateful to the first responders on the scene today.”
