Transgender Killer Pleads Guilty, Avoids Death Penalty

A 25-year-old man who killed a 29-year-old woman on a hiking trail has pleaded guilty and will avoid the death penalty. Teasley, who was on probation after serving a year in prison for armed robbery and other offenses, was arrested days after the killing. Neighbors found the victim’s body at the foot of a barbed wire fence, and police reported that he chased her, killed her with a pocketknife, and jumped the fence to escape.

Psychological Struggles and Confession

Before the killing, Teasley wrote in a diary that he was ‘battling with my gender identity and sexuality,’ which clashed with his Christian faith. He expressed frustration about living a life of service to God while dealing with his sins. He also wrote about being depressed by seeing ‘beautiful’ women because he felt trapped in a male body.

Investigation and Evidence

Investigators found a photo of Teasley in an outfit similar to the one the victim was wearing when she was killed. His boss told police he had recently been fired for being aggressive toward female employees and had stolen clothing. His attorney referred to him as ‘she’ in court.

Victim’s Family Supports Plea

The victim’s family told ABC15 they support the plea agreement. ‘After 3½ incredibly long and painful years, our family supports the State’s decision to enter into a plea agreement in Lauren’s case. This means we will not have to endure a trial or sit in a courtroom and hear every painful detail of the crime that took Lauren from us,’ they said. While no sentence will ever bring Lauren back, they are relieved knowing he will never be released and will never have the opportunity to harm another person.

Uncertain Prison Assignment

It is currently unclear if Teasley will serve his life sentence in a male or female prison. The case highlights the complex intersection of personal identity, mental health, and legal consequences.
