A transgender woman has been charged with first-degree murder after she fatally stabbed a man in Chicago following a dispute over gender-related comments. According to court documents, Kelly Day, 32, stabbed 50-year-old Larry Young more than 13 times near a gas station on East 87th Street in South Side Chicago. The attack was so violent that the knife blade broke off and became lodged in Young’s skull.
Incident Details and Context
The incident reportedly began earlier in the day when Day was mocked by a group of people for using the women’s bathroom at a McDonald’s. Day, who was assigned male at birth but identifies as a woman, told her wife that she did not want ‘bullies’ to get away with making fun of her gender, according to prosecutors.
Later that day, Young approached Day, her wife, and her stepson while walking on 87th Street. Young, who did not know Day, began making comments about her gender, which triggered Day’s anger. She became extremely upset and resisted her wife’s attempts to pull her away. Young then pushed Day before walking away toward a nearby gas station.
Attack and Legal Proceedings
Day followed Young across the street and the two engaged in a brief altercation. Surveillance footage from the gas station shows Day holding a knife, standing over Young as he lay on the ground, and repeatedly stabbing him in the head, neck, and upper shoulders. The attack was witnessed by Day’s stepson and wife.
During a hearing at Central Bond Court, Judge John Hock approved a request to keep Day in custody pending trial, citing the brutality of the attack. Day’s attorney claimed the incident was an escalation in self-defense. Prosecutors stated that the stabbing may have been heightened by the earlier encounter at McDonald’s.
Day is now facing charges of first-degree murder. The case has sparked discussions about gender identity, public safety, and the legal implications of self-defense claims in such violent incidents.
