President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday night that his administration has already paid out nearly $1 billion in settlements to veterans, their families, and civilian employees who were exposed to toxic drinking water at Marine Corps Camp Lejeune in North Carolina between 1953 and 1987. The announcement was made during a rally in North Carolina, where Trump emphasized the need for swift justice for those who suffered long-term health consequences due to the contaminated water.

Accelerated Settlement Process

According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), more than $919.7 million has been paid out since Trump took office in January 2025. The administration has settled claims for about 3,300 individuals under the 2022 law that guarantees relief for those who developed cancer or other illnesses from drinking water contaminated at the base. From 2022 to the start of 2025, only 459 settlements were paid, totaling $59.6 million.

Legal Efforts and Advocacy

The 2022 law, known as the ‘Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act,’ was spearheaded by South Carolina-based attorney Ed Bell. Bell, who has spent half of his 44-year legal career fighting for Camp Lejeune victims, is the lead counsel on the case. The law was named after Heath Robinson, an Ohio Army National Guard combat medic who developed a rare autoimmune disease and lung cancer from toxic burn pit exposure and died in 2020 at the age of 39.

Contamination and Health Impacts

Between 1953 and 1987, three of the base’s eight water systems were found to contain contaminated water. Despite knowing about the contamination, the government continued to allow troops to use the water. Bell noted that even after the contamination was discovered, the military did not take immediate action, leading to severe health consequences for many individuals, including pregnant women who drank the water and lost their babies.

Settlement Process and Legal Alternatives

The DOJ and the Department of Navy have designed the settlement program as an alternative to lengthy litigation, offering quicker payouts to victims. Bell described the process as ‘laborious,’ with payouts determined based on the severity of the claimants’ present and future medical conditions. The Trump administration announced in March that it was prioritizing the payouts and accelerating the process.

Public Reaction and Relief

Bell expressed that many of the claimants have been waiting a long time for justice and are relieved that the government has finally taken action. ‘A lot of these people have been waiting a long time, and quite frankly, I think a lot of them are relieved,’ Bell said. ‘They feel like the government has finally said, ‘we’re sorry,’ by helping with the settlements, so I think it’s very positive.’
