President Donald Trump has approved the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, by a U.S. Army firing squad, marking the first military execution of a U.S. service member in over six decades, the Pentagon announced Monday.

Approval of Death Sentence

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recommended the death penalty for Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others during the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. Prosecutors stated Hasan shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attack.

Trump’s endorsement follows Hegseth’s previous commitment to carrying out the death sentence. In September, Hegseth said he was “100% committed to ensuring the death penalty is carried out for Nidal Hasan,” emphasizing that the victims and survivors deserved justice without delay.

Historical Context

The military has not executed a service member since 1961, when John Bennett was executed for the rape and attempted murder of an 11-year-old girl in Austria, according to ABC News. This case is the first such execution of a U.S. service member in over six decades.

The Pentagon stated that the Secretary of the Army will determine the time and location of the execution, calling it “Judgment day for Hasan.”

Public Reaction and Legal Process

Hegseth’s one-word post, “Justice,” underscored the gravity of the decision. The military’s legal process for execution involves a thorough review of the case, including the determination of the method and timing.

Hasan’s case has been a focal point of public and legal discourse, with many emphasizing the need for accountability and justice for the victims of the Fort Hood attack.
