President Donald Trump declined to take a position on calls to deport Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) following a federal raid on her Washington, D.C., home, according to reports. During a press briefing on Tuesday, Trump stated, “I think she’s a terrible person, I think she’s a terrible congresswoman, I don’t think she loves our country at all, but I don’t take a position.”
Federal Search Amid Immigration Probe
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) raided Omar’s residence on Monday as part of an investigation into immigration documents completed by her late father when she was a child, Fox News reported. The Justice Department confirmed the agents executed a court-authorized search warrant. Omar, who arrived in the U.S. as a child refugee from Somalia in 1995, obtained her citizenship in 2000.
Omar Calls Raid Political Move
Following the raid, Omar posted on X, stating she was “targeted” by the Trump administration for political reasons. She accused the administration of using federal law enforcement to “weaponize” against political enemies. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” she wrote.
Vice President Denies Involvement
Vice President JD Vance later addressed the situation, saying he and the president try to “stay out” of Justice Department probes. “I did not have advance notice her home was being raided,” Vance said, adding that the administration aims to let the law follow the facts rather than creating them for political purposes.
Marital History Under Scrutiny
Omar’s marital history has also drawn attention. She married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen, in 2009, and the couple reportedly split in 2011 before finalizing their divorce in 2017. Critics have raised questions about the nature of their relationship, with some claiming Elmi is her biological brother.
Previous Deportation Remarks
Trump previously called for Omar to be sent out of the country. After the State of the Union address in February, he wrote on Truth Social that Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) should be “institutionalized” and sent back to “where they came from.” He also claimed to have met with the head of Somalia and asked him to “take her back,” adding, “He said I don’t want her,” which he appeared to joke about.
