Two Dominican nationals, released under the Biden administration, are wanted for the stabbing and attempted robbery of an off-duty NYPD detective in New York City last Friday. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), both suspects crossed into the U.S. at the Arizona border and were released by local authorities despite having pending deportation orders.
Details of the Crime
The incident occurred in New York City, where the suspects, identified as 24-year-old Sneider Mejia Bautista and 25-year-old Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo, were arrested multiple times for various offenses. Despite repeated arrests and detainers from ICE, they were released due to New York’s sanctuary policies, which often ignore federal requests to hold individuals for deportation.
Arrest History and Legal Issues
Mejia Bautista crossed the border near San Luis, Arizona, in December 2022 with his family and was released into the U.S. His family has faced deportation orders since May. He was arrested twice this year, once in January for criminal possession of stolen property, and again in October for criminal possession of a weapon. Despite an ICE detainer, he was released due to local cooperation policies.
Caraballo crossed the same Arizona border in February 2023 and was released with a future court date. Since then, he has been arrested five times for offenses ranging from reckless driving to possession of a loaded firearm. ICE never managed to file a detainer on him, and he was released so quickly that federal agents were unaware of his arrests until he was already gone.
Government Response and Previous Incidents
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized the release of the suspects, stating that they were let back on the streets without proper deportation procedures. The attack follows a similar incident in which another Dominican national, also released under Biden policies, shot an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer in a Manhattan park. This comes after Operation Rotten Apple, a 30-day ICE sweep that resulted in over 2,100 arrests in New York after the state ended cooperation agreements with federal immigration agents.
Broader Implications
The case highlights the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement and the impact of sanctuary policies on public safety. As local authorities continue to release individuals with criminal records, the federal government faces mounting pressure to enforce immigration laws more rigorously.
