The United Kingdom has deployed fighter jets and transport aircraft to support Saudi Arabia in its defense against attacks from the Iran-backed Houthi group. The move comes as the kingdom faces ongoing missile and drone strikes from the militant group based in Yemen.

RAF Typhoons Conduct Defensive Missions

The Financial Times reports that Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets will conduct defensive counter-air operations over Saudi Arabia, helping to protect the country’s cities, civilian populations, and critical infrastructure from Houthi attacks. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed the involvement, stating that the RAF’s efforts are part of an extended mission to bolster Saudi defense capabilities.

Logistical Support and Extended Missions

In addition to the fighter jets, an Atlas A400M transport aircraft will be deployed to assist in moving heavy equipment across Saudi Arabia. This follows the deployment of an RAF Voyager refuelling aircraft earlier this month, as reported by Bloomberg. The UK’s military involvement is part of a broader effort to support Saudi Arabia’s defense against the escalating Houthi missile campaign.

Strong Condemnation of Houthi Attacks

Prime Minister Andy Burnham strongly condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia’s busiest airport, which killed at least 12 people, including an American, and wounded over 300 others. The strike marked Saudi Arabia’s deadliest incident in over a decade, according to the Wall Street Journal. Burnham emphasized the UK’s continued support for Saudi Arabia in response to the attacks.

UK’s Ongoing Support and Commitment

The UK has already deployed air-defense systems and military advisers to assist Saudi Arabia in its defense against missile and drone attacks. RAF air-to-air refuelling assets have also been sent, and the mission is being extended by another 90 days. This demonstrates the UK’s commitment to its strategic alliance with Saudi Arabia amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
