Ukraine has accused Russia of targeting emergency workers during a deadly strike in the Zaporizhzhia region, claiming at least 55 people were killed in the village of Komyshuvakha. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, struck a former school and nearby shelter that had already been damaged by Russian guided bombs earlier in the week. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service confirmed that no one was injured in the Sunday strike, but specialized rescue equipment was damaged.

Double Tap Strike and Missing Bodies

Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, HUR, reported that around 50 people were still listed as missing following the attack. Many of the bodies recovered have not been identified, with DNA analysis ongoing. Village resident Mykola Krasnov, 72, expressed his anguish over his wife’s disappearance, who had gone to retrieve humanitarian aid only to be struck by a 3-ton bomb. He said he had not received any word from rescuers.

Community Mourning and Calls for Action

A farewell ceremony was held in Zaporizhzhia for six officers killed in the Russian strikes, including three who died near the former school. Families and officers gathered in the rain, with police lieutenant colonel Andrii Khomenko reflecting on the bravery of the fallen. Yuliia Nykonenko, a senior police lieutenant, highlighted the officers’ efforts to save others, including children, and shared a memory of escaping a Russian FPV drone together.

Memorial and Urgent Appeals

The community also said goodbye to three residents among the dead, who were buried together in a planned memorial section of the Zaporizhzhia cemetery. Yurii Karapetian, a community leader whose wife, Natalia Karapetian, was killed, described her final act of distributing bread to those in the shelter before the bombs struck. He urged the international community to act, warning that if Russia is not stopped, it will not stop at Ukraine.
