Woman Foils Kidnapping Attempt with Bystander Help in Honolulu

A 77-year-old woman played a key role in thwarting a daylight kidnapping attempt in Honolulu’s Diamond Head neighborhood, according to local reports. The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on October 26, when a 24-year-old woman was in a parking garage with another older woman. A massive man stalked them from behind, as captured in a video posted to X.

After some words, the man attempted to grab the younger woman, who dodged him and tried to flee.

The man caught up with her, picked her up, and carried her kicking and screaming toward his vehicle. The older woman quickly alerted bystanders, which led to the woman being freed.

“I was yelling, ‘Help! Help!’ and she was yelling, too. She was saying, ‘You don’t want to do this. Don’t do this,'” the older woman said, according to the Daily Mail. “He looked like a monster. He just had so much hatred and craziness in his eyes,” she added.

Residents of the condominium complex responded swiftly. “I yelled at him, ‘Let her go. I’ve called the police. I’m coming down there after you,'” Mike Finkelstein said. Beverly Louis described seeing “a man bear hugging a woman and dragging her to the back of his truck.” She also recounted hearing neighbors screaming and joining in, “Drop her! Drop her! Drop her!” as the woman screamed for her life.

A witness took a photo of the truck to help police catch the suspect, who drove off. However, 23-year-old Diesel Kawelo made it easy for them. About three hours after the incident, he was arrested while running naked down a street. Kawelo was indicted for kidnapping and harassment, a Honolulu prosecutor said Friday, according to KHON-TV.

Kidnapping is a class A felony and harassment is a petty misdemeanor. A conviction could mean up to 20 years in prison.
