Gina Hinojosa Shifts Focus from Culture Wars to Economic Issues

Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa is distancing herself from the culture war politics of Woke 1.0, shifting focus to economic issues that resonate with voters. Hinojosa, running against three-term Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, is emphasizing public schools, healthcare, grocery and utility costs, and ending Texas’ costly data center projects as the main pillars of her campaign.

Steering Clear of Culture Wars

Recently, Hinojosa told Politico she has moved away from the left-versus-right culture war issues, prioritizing the concerns of working families. “We’re not doing the culture wars. We are talking about how we’re gonna deliver for Texans, how we’re gonna make life easier for working families,” she said.

Despite her previous involvement in culture war issues, such as voting against a bill banning certain sex change surgeries on minors and supporting a transgender flag at the state house, Hinojosa is now focusing on pragmatic solutions. Her recent ad even highlights her pronouns as “mom, Texan and soon-to-be governor,” signaling a shift in her messaging.

Polls Show Strong Support

Recent polls suggest that Hinojosa’s move away from culture wars is resonating with voters. A September NPR/Marist poll gave her a 3-point lead over Abbott, 49 to 46 percent. Among independents, she leads by 13 points, and another poll commissioned by the Texas Public Policy Foundation found that Abbott only leads by a single point.

The RealClearPolitics average shows Abbott leading by two points, but the tight margins may be influenced by Abbott’s support for Big Tech, AI, and data centers, which have faced growing opposition. Hinojosa has been targeting Abbott’s pro-data center record, accusing him of “selling out” voters to Big Tech firms.

Meanwhile, rural conservatives are expressing frustration with Abbott’s policies, as he continues to push for data centers and power line projects, despite growing grassroots opposition. County commissioner Shawn Nanny noted that many rural residents feel Abbott does not truly care about their concerns or their way of life.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the positive poll numbers, Hinojosa faces a significant challenge in flipping the governor’s seat blue. The last time Texas had a Democratic governor was in 1995, when Ann Richards completed a single four-year term. However, with voters frustrated over high grocery and gas prices, data centers, and corporate favoritism, Hinojosa’s focus on economic issues may give her an edge in this election year.
