Peggy Flanagan, the lieutenant governor of Minnesota, has won the state’s open U.S. Senate seat in a decisive victory over Republican Michele Tafoya. The race was called for Flanagan by NBC News shortly after polls closed on Tuesday night, with her securing 54.5% of the vote compared to Tafoya’s 42.7%, according to results tallied as of 10:45 p.m.
Progressive Victory in a Competitive Race
Flanagan’s win marks a significant shift in Minnesota’s political landscape, as she defeated Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) in the Democratic primary, continuing a trend of progressive candidates outperforming more moderate Democrats in this midterm election cycle. Tafoya, a former sports broadcaster, had entered the race in January and won the Republican primary with ease, defeating former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze and former basketball player Royce White.
Political Backing and Public Statements
The seat became available after Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) announced in early 2025 that she would not seek re-election. Smith had previously endorsed Flanagan, calling her a “fierce fighter” who has “delivered results for Minnesotans.” Flanagan’s victory also comes amid ongoing political tensions, with former President Donald Trump recently claiming that the only way for Tafoya to lose was if Democrats cheated.
“Don’t allow them to play with the Votes after the race is over. The Federal Government will be watching closely,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The only way she can lose is if they cheat by playing games with the Ballots as they come in.”
A New Chapter for Minnesota
Flanagan’s win signals a shift toward more progressive leadership in the state’s Senate delegation. As she prepares to take office, her victory underscores the growing influence of left-leaning candidates in key battleground states. With the seat now firmly in Democratic hands, the political landscape of the U.S. Senate continues to evolve, reflecting broader national trends and voter priorities.
