Russian Strikes Disrupt Ukrainian TV, Data Centers

2 min read

Ukrainian TV channels have gone dark in Kyiv after Russian strikes targeted critical data centers, disrupting communication and information flow. The attacks, part of a broader campaign of relentless strikes on infrastructure, have left many residents without access to news and essential services.

Escalation of Russian Attacks

Since early summer, Russian forces have intensified their attacks on Ukraine, responding to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s ’40-day campaign of deep strikes in Russia.’ These strikes have targeted not only military and economic assets but also vital infrastructure, including data centers and internet providers.

Recent attacks have severely impacted Ukraine’s ability to maintain communication. On one occasion, almost all Ukrainian TV channels were taken offline after data centers were hit. Some residents report only partial access to broadcasts, while others have been left without any television service.

Data Center Damage and Internet Outages

The damage to data centers has had a cascading effect. Cosmonova, a Ukrainian data center, confirmed its main facilities were damaged in an attack, leading to internet outages affecting about 100,000 households in Kyiv and surrounding areas. The disruption has also impacted news and television broadcasts, with multiple channels reporting service interruptions.

According to Ukrainian outlet Channel 24, the attack on Cosmonova has affected broadcasts from several television and news channels. Local TV channel ‘We – Ukraine+’ and Army TV are among the affected channels, with some reporting ongoing service issues.

Impact on Civilian Life and Information Access

Strikes on data centers and internet infrastructure have not only disrupted daily life but also hindered access to critical information. This mirrors the 2023 cyberattack on Kyivstar, where IT infrastructure damage led to issues with emergency sirens. The attacks are part of a broader strategy to cause maximum disruption for ordinary Ukrainians.

Zelensky has condemned the attacks, stating they aim to disrupt people’s ability to stay connected, study, and work. A recent drone strike in Kyiv killed four people and damaged a data center, with Russia confirming the target was a site used by Ukrainian military intelligence.

Broader Implications

The ongoing strikes highlight the evolving nature of the conflict, with cyber and infrastructure attacks becoming increasingly common. As Ukraine continues to face these challenges, the resilience of its communication networks will be crucial in maintaining public morale and operational effectiveness.
