Trump Criticizes Florida Rep. Salazar Over Immigration Stance

2 min read

President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Florida Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar after she released a campaign ad criticizing his immigration enforcement policies. The ad, filmed in front of the White House, accused Trump of taking immigration enforcement too far and warned that his policies risk alienating Hispanic voters who helped him win the 2024 election.

Salazar’s Ad Sparks Reactions

In the ad, Salazar, a three-term Cuban-American representative from Florida’s 27th District, stated, “Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far.” She also noted that “the same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today.” She emphasized that her comments were not about granting amnesty but about ensuring a “dignified life in this promised land,” comparing her stance to historical figures like Lincoln on slavery and Reagan on communism.

Trump’s Response

Trump responded to the ad by telling reporters in the Oval Office that he disagreed with Salazar’s assessment. “She got a little bit soft on the border,” he said. “I understand that. I understand that. But I just don’t happen to be there.” He also claimed that Salazar would not have won her 2020 election without his endorsement, highlighting the political stakes of their disagreement.

Salazar’s Reassurance

Salazar later claimed she had a “fantastic” and “very good conversation” with Trump after the ad was released. She said he was “very courteous” and “very receptive” to her concerns, and that she assured him she would “keep the pot of gold” he brought to the GOP among Hispanic voters if he distinguished “the narco and the nanny and the gangster and the gardener.”

Neither the White House nor Salazar’s office immediately confirmed whether she still had Trump’s endorsement, leaving the political dynamics between the two figures uncertain as the 2024 election cycle continues.
