FBI Deputy Director Andrew Bailey has resigned after just one year in the role, according to multiple news outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and MSNOW. Bailey, who had been overseeing election matters, announced his decision to return to his family in Missouri.
Leadership and Contributions
Bailey was appointed as Co-Deputy Director of the FBI in August 2025 by then-Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel. In his resignation message, Bailey expressed gratitude to President Trump, Attorney General Todd Blanche, and Patel for the opportunity to serve.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, we have delivered historic results in our mission to Make America Safe Again,” Bailey stated. “With great pride in what we have accomplished, I am announcing that I am stepping down to return to my family in Missouri. I am confident Director Patel will continue to reform the FBI, combat violent crime, defend the homeland, and restore public trust in this institution of excellence,” he added.
Reactions from Leadership
FBI Director Kash Patel praised Bailey’s contributions, acknowledging his role in reforming the FBI and fulfilling President Trump’s promise to make America safe again. “Although Andrew is leaving the FBI in order to return to his family in Missouri, his fantastic contribution instituting critical reforms which resulted in our historic success will live on,” Patel said.
Political and Legal Background
Bailey is a staunch Trump supporter who has been actively involved in legal challenges against what he describes as politically motivated prosecutions. In 2024, he filed a lawsuit against the State of New York, accusing it of an unconstitutional attack on the democratic process through its legal actions against President Trump.
He also filed a brief at the US Supreme Court in 2023 to halt Special Counsel Jack Smith’s move to circumvent the appellate court in his January 6 case against President Trump. Additionally, Bailey played a key role in taking The Gateway Pundit’s First Amendment lawsuit against the Biden Administration to the US Supreme Court.
