Three major news outlets—CNN, MS NOW, and Politico—have returned to a federal court seeking a temporary injunction to restore their White House credentials, which were revoked by the Trump administration. The outlets allege that the administration has continued to inconsistently enforce its ban on media access, despite a previous restraining order issued by U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly.
Legal Battle Over Media Access
The plaintiffs argue that the White House’s actions constitute an unlawful assault on their First Amendment rights and could cause irreparable harm if the ban is not halted. In a 42-page filing, the attorneys for the three organizations emphasized that the administration’s actions leave little doubt about its intent to reinstate the full ban if allowed.
“Because the ban is an unlawful assault on the most fundamental First Amendment freedoms and will inflict irreparable harm on Plaintiffs and the public if not restrained, this Court should preliminarily enjoin its enforcement pending the resolution of this case,” the filing stated.
Temporary Restraining Order Expires Soon
A two-week temporary restraining order, issued by Judge Kelly last week, restored the outlets’ access to the White House, but it is set to expire on October 8. The latest filing seeks to extend this access until the case is resolved, with a hearing scheduled and a prompt ruling expected.
The Trump administration has not shown any intention to reverse its stance on the media ban, which was imposed on September 19. Attorney General Todd Blanche reiterated the administration’s position that access to the White House is a privilege, not a right, during an appearance on ABC.
With the administration’s response due by October 2 and the plaintiffs’ final brief expected by October 5, the legal battle over media access continues to unfold in the courts. The outcome could have significant implications for press freedom and government transparency in the United States.
