Ken Paxton (R) and James Talarico (D) are locked in a tight race for the Texas U.S. Senate seat, according to a recent poll showing both candidates with 48% support. The Stratus Intelligence survey, conducted among 865 likely voters from September 22-24, found the two candidates tied, with 4% of voters undecided. The poll, sponsored by Texans for a Conservative Majority, also highlighted Republican candidates leading in six other statewide executive races.
Republican Leads in Older Voters, Democrat Among Younger Crowd
The poll revealed that Paxton, the Republican Texas attorney general, holds an edge among voters aged 55 and older, while Talarico, a Democrat state legislator, leads among younger voters. Paxton’s image was rated 41% favorable versus 55% unfavorable, compared to Talarico’s 46% favorable and 49% unfavorable. This marks a shift from a previous Marist poll, which had shown Talarico with a six-point lead over Paxton.
Republican Dominance in Other Statewide Races
The survey also found that Republican candidates are leading in six other statewide executive races. Greg Abbott leads Gina Hinojosa in the gubernatorial race with 50% to 45%, while Dan Patrick holds a 49% to 44% lead over Vikki Goodwin for lieutenant governor. Mayes Middleton leads Nathan Johnson in the attorney general race with 47% to 42%, and Nate Sheets is ahead of Clayton Tucker in the commissioner of agriculture race with 47% to 41%.
Continued Tight Race in Senate Race
Paxton and Talarico’s 48% support in the latest poll comes after a Marist poll last Tuesday showed Talarico with a six-point lead. The Marist poll, conducted with 1,139 Texas registered voters from September 17-20, found Talarico with 50% support compared to Paxton’s 44%. As the November election approaches, both candidates are vying for the support of a broad range of voters, with key demographic differences shaping the race.
