WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, President Donald Trump and leading figures in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry signed the ‘White House Accord on Super Intelligence,’ a document outlining voluntary commitments to ensure transparency and accountability in the development of advanced AI technologies. The accord, described by House Speaker Mike Johnson as a ‘Joint Commitment on Frontier SI Responsibilities,’ was signed during a private luncheon attended by Trump, Johnson, cabinet officials, and executives from major tech companies.
Industry Leaders Commit to Oversight and Transparency
Johnson emphasized that the document represents a collective effort by AI leaders to build trust and ensure responsible development. He stated that the companies have committed to ‘robust internal controls and layers of internal and external review.’ Executives from xAI, Meta, Anthropic, and Nvidia were present during the signing, with Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Dario Amodei, and Jensen Huang among those in attendance.
Johnson highlighted that the accord is a ‘statement of principles’ and a ‘statement of standards’ that outlines expectations for the industry. He noted that Congress and the White House will continue to guide AI development in a ‘safe manner,’ underscoring the importance of regulatory oversight in the rapidly evolving field of AI.
Trump Calls Accord ‘Like a Constitution’
Trump, who joined the press gaggle shortly after the signing, compared the accord to a ‘constitution,’ calling it a ‘form of protection’ for the nation. He praised the executives for coming together to address concerns about AI and its potential impact on society. ‘They love our country, they love the world,’ he said, ‘and they came together, and they did something … it’s almost like a constitution in a way.’
Zuckerberg, representing Meta, called the internal controls and layered reviews ‘good steps,’ emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in AI development. He noted that the commitments are a starting point for the industry and not the final solution.
Rebranding AI as ‘Super Intelligence’
As part of the broader initiative, Trump also signed an executive order to rebrand artificial intelligence as ‘Super Intelligence,’ signaling a shift in terminology and policy focus. The move has been framed as part of a national security push to position the U.S. at the forefront of AI development and regulation.
