Jeffrey Soros, the nephew of billionaire Democrat donor George Soros, has revealed that his family’s fellowship program helped fund the education of Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. During a closed-door fundraiser in California, Soros recounted how he met El-Sayed in 2012 when the candidate was a finalist for the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans.
The fellowship, established by Soros’ parents to support immigrants and their children pursuing graduate study, awarded up to $90,000 over two years in the 2012 cycle. El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, won the fellowship that year, and it still lists him among its fellows. The event, hosted by Soros and his wife, Catharine, also featured Pod Save America hosts Jon Favreau, Tommy Vietor, and Ben Rhodes.
El-Sayed, who has made getting money out of politics a central theme of his campaign, faces scrutiny over the funding connections. In a 2025 interview, he criticized the system for allowing corporations and billionaires to buy influence. Republican nominee Mike Rogers’ campaign seized on the footage, accusing El-Sayed of hypocrisy after he previously begged Chuck Schumer for financial support.
The El-Sayed campaign did not directly address the fellowship remarks, instead focusing on the broader issue of dark money in the race. The fundraiser comes as Rogers leads El-Sayed in the polls, with the latest survey showing Rogers at 44.4% and El-Sayed at 43.1%.
