Rural Voters Say Trump Health Policies Hurt Their Communities

A new KFF-Associated Press poll reveals that most supporters of the ‘Make America Healthy Again’ (MAHA) movement in rural areas do not believe the Trump administration’s health policies are helping their communities. The survey found that about 80 percent of rural U.S. voters said the administration’s policies have had a negative impact or no effect on the health of individuals in their local communities. Specifically, 68 percent of rural voters who aligned with the MAHA movement shared this sentiment.
Trust in Health Officials Varies by Party
The poll also highlighted stark differences in trust levels between rural Democrats and Republicans regarding health officials. Only 10 percent of rural Democratic voters expressed trust in HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., while 74 percent of rural Republicans did. Similarly, 5 percent of rural Democrats and 69 percent of rural Republicans reported trusting President Trump for reliable health information.
Administration Announces New Healthcare Investment
In response to the poll, the Trump administration announced a $20 million investment to enhance healthcare technology and expand patient access in rural North Carolina through the Rural Health Transformation Program. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emphasized the administration’s commitment to strengthening rural health infrastructure and bringing care closer to home.
Poll Methodology and Findings
The survey, conducted from August 12 to 24, included 2,241 U.S. adults registered to vote in rural areas. The sample was drawn from the probability-based SSRS Opinion Panel, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.
These findings underscore a growing divide in perceptions of the Trump administration’s health policies, particularly among rural communities that have long faced challenges in accessing quality healthcare. The poll highlights the need for targeted policy solutions that address the unique needs of rural populations.
