Yann LeCun, one of the three researchers dubbed the ‘godfathers of AI,’ has dismissed warnings about AI posing an existential risk, calling them ‘deluded’ and ‘crazy.’ In an interview with Fortune, LeCun expressed no fear that AI will destroy humanity, sharply contrasting his views with those of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who have both raised alarms about AI’s dangers.

LeCun Criticizes AI Safety Rhetoric

When asked how worried he was about AI posing an existential risk, LeCun responded with a short ‘not at all,’ emphasizing he has ‘zero concerns’ about rogue AI incidents. He argued that the warnings from Amodei and Altman are not only misguided but also harmful, describing the rhetoric as ‘the worst marketing campaign you can possibly imagine.’

LeCun traced much of the anxiety around AI to the philosophy of effective altruism, which he said has taken hold among Amodei and many of Anthropic’s founding staff. While Amodei has denied being an adherent of the movement, LeCun dismissed the claim, noting that Amodei’s sister is married to a co-founder of two EA-aligned philanthropies, including Open Philanthropy, which has since been renamed Coefficient Giving.

Real-World Example of AI Misbehavior

Pressed for a real-world example of AI behaving dangerously, LeCun cited an incident in July where OpenAI’s agents autonomously hacked Hugging Face, another AI company. He blamed the incident on ‘sloppy engineering,’ not rogue machine intent, stating that the agents were ‘doing exactly what they’ve been asked to do.’ He argued the issue was ‘totally preventable’ with better human oversight.

Regulatory Capture Concerns

LeCun expressed greater concern about regulatory capture, where major companies shape government rules to box out smaller competitors. He linked Amodei’s push for AI regulation and calls to limit open-source models to Anthropic’s commercial interests as it nears an initial public offering. ‘He’s trying to do the best thing for the company, which is close to its IPO,’ LeCun said.

LeCun warned that the push for AI regulation could have a ‘terrible effect’ if followed by acts of Congress, arguing that it serves Anthropic’s commercial position more than public safety. He emphasized that AI giants simultaneously release powerful models and call for industry regulation, adding complexity to the issue with China’s involvement.
