Senate Democrats reallocate millions to Michigan and Maine as they cut spending in North Carolina and Georgia.

Senate Democrats’ top super PAC, the Senate Majority PAC, has shifted nearly $7 million to competitive races in Michigan and Maine after reducing spending in North Carolina and Georgia, where Democratic candidates hold strong leads. The move, reported by Semafor, highlights the party’s strategic focus on key Senate races ahead of the 2024 midterms.
Strategic Reallocation of Funds
The Senate Majority PAC allocated $3.7 million to support Democratic Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and $3 million to help Democratic Maine Senate nominee Troy Jackson. These races are seen as critical battlegrounds, with El-Sayed leading by 2.7 points and Jackson by 1.3 points against their Republican opponents, according to RealClear Polling averages.
Reduced Spending in Safe States
Democrats cut advertising spending in North Carolina and Georgia, where former Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Democratic Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff hold significant leads. This strategic shift allows the party to focus resources on states where they could potentially gain ground, including Kansas, Iowa, and Texas, where Republicans currently hold sway.
Republican Response and Adjustments
Republicans have responded by increasing their own spending in key races. The Senate Leadership Fund, the GOP’s top Senate campaign arm, has invested $14 million in Kansas and $5 million in South Carolina, while Republican PACs have spent over $200 million in Texas to support Ken Paxton against Democratic nominee James Talarico.
Whatley’s Campaign Takes a Pause
Republican North Carolina Senate nominee Michael Whatley’s campaign has paused its ad buys, citing a temporary strategy to focus on late-deciding voters. Whatley’s spokesperson, DJ Griffin, stated that the campaign would return with a “closing message” that highlights Cooper’s health questions and the importance of voter turnout.
Competitive Races in Kansas and Beyond
The Senate Majority PAC has also invested $5 million in the Kansas Senate race, where Republican Roger Marshall faces Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton. As of Tuesday, the race was tied, according to RealClear Polling, making it a key contest for both parties.
