Senate Republicans’ top campaign arm, the Senate Leadership Fund, is set to spend $1 million in deep-red Mississippi as the Senate race becomes increasingly competitive, according to a source familiar with the plan. The decision comes after Senate Democrats’ top campaign arm allocated $1.2 million for television advertisements to support Democratic Mississippi Senate nominee Scott Colom.
The race has drawn significant attention, with Hyde-Smith leading Colom by single digits in recent polls. A Data for Progress survey from August found Hyde-Smith in the lead by six points, while an Impact Research survey from April showed her leading by three points, according to The New York Times.
Wedgewood Polls admitted to fabricating a poll suggesting that Hyde-Smith held a four-point lead. The firm stated the surveys were part of an “experimental project” to expose how easily a fabricated polling firm could mislead the public.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Mississippi Thursday to campaign with Colom. Democratic Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, Democratic Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, and former President Barack Obama also campaigned and endorsed Colom. Obama appeared in a commercial to endorse the Mississippi Democrat.
President Donald Trump won Mississippi by a 24-point margin against Harris. The state has not had a Democratic U.S. senator since former Democratic Mississippi Sen. John Stennis retired in 1989. Hyde-Smith won her 2020 election by a 54.1% to 44.1% margin.
Republican PACs have spent unprecedented amounts to defend Republican-held seats, including in Texas and Kansas. Republicans spent over $300 million to support Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, $14 million to support Republican Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall, and $5 million to support Republican South Carolina Sen. Darline Graham.
The PACs scaled back their time and resources in North Carolina and Georgia, two battleground states. Democrats also slashed ad spending in the states while Democratic Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff and former Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper held comfortable leads in the polls.
NEW — Senate Leadership Fund plans to spend more than $1 million in Mississippi’s Senate race to defend Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith against Democrat Scott Colom, per Semafor. The buy follows Senate Majority PAC’s $1.2 million ad campaign.
