In the ongoing legal battle surrounding the ‘Cornell 7’ case, attorneys are engaging in a public feud over their media strategies, with each side accusing the other of manipulating public perception to gain an advantage. Jane Doe’s attorney, Thomas Giuffra, recently submitted a letter to the court urging it not to impose restrictions on media appearances, arguing that such limitations would prevent him from countering potential narratives pushed by the defense.

Giuffra Accuses Defense of Media Leaks

Giuffra claimed that the defense attorneys, including those representing defendant Diego Sarabia, were leaking documents to the press, which he alleged could prejudice the jury pool. He also named TMZ in his letter, suggesting that Mark Geragos, a cohost of the ‘2 Angry Men’ podcast, was using his relationship with the outlet to disseminate information about the case due to his daughter, Teny Geragos, representing defendant Winston Lee.

Defense Attorney Condemns Giuffra’s Tactics

Andrew Miltenberg, who represents defendant Gillio Lopes, responded by calling out Giuffra’s hypocrisy. Miltenberg noted that Giuffra had previously promoted his client’s allegations through various media platforms, turning the case into a national spectacle before the defendants had a chance to respond. He criticized Giuffra for opposing media restrictions while simultaneously using the media to amplify his client’s claims, effectively allowing the defense to control the narrative.

Legal Battle Over Public Scrutiny

Miltenberg pointed out that Giuffra had revealed the identities of the seven defendants while keeping his own client’s identity protected. While he acknowledged the importance of privacy, he argued that Giuffra appeared to be comfortable with the media frenzy that followed, especially when his side was driving the story. Miltenberg emphasized that both Jane Doe and Gillio Lopes deserve the right to privacy and a fair opportunity to be heard, which Giuffra was not allowing.

Case Background

Jane Doe alleges that seven fraternity members sexually assaulted her at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. The men have denied the allegations, claiming the encounter was consensual or that they were not involved. Miltenberg denied any leaks of documents and called on Giuffra to provide evidence to substantiate his claims. He concluded by stating that Giuffra could not have it both ways—using the media to promote his allegations while demanding the defense remain silent.
