U.S. Military Eyes MOAB for Potential Iran Strike
U.S. military reportedly considering use of MOAB against Iran amid tensions.

The U.S. military is reportedly evaluating the use of the ‘mother of all bombs’ (MOAB) in potential strikes against Iran, according to recent intelligence reports. The weapon, formally known as the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, is the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal. The consideration comes amid ongoing tensions and President Donald Trump’s directive to develop strike packages that include energy infrastructure and the potential use of the MOAB.
MOAB’s Past Use and Strategic Role
The MOAB was first deployed in combat in April 2017 during a mission in Afghanistan aimed at targeting an ISIS-K tunnel complex. The weapon was selected for its ability to minimize risks to Afghan and American forces in areas heavily fortified by ISIS-K with underground tunnels and bunkers. Despite its destructive power, military officials have expressed doubts about its effectiveness in achieving strategic objectives in a potential strike on Iran.
Iranian Response and Regional Impact
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has acknowledged the severe economic and military strain his country is facing. He described the current situation as the most challenging in 48 years since the Islamic Revolution. Meanwhile, regional leaders, including Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, are preparing for worst-case scenarios as the conflict continues to strain economies and disrupt stability.
Domestic Pressures and Political Context
At home, rising energy costs have added to economic pressures on American households and are expected to create political challenges for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Trump has defended his administration’s actions, stating that the costs are a ‘very inexpensive price to pay’ for preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Trump’s Stance on Iran and Military Options
Trump has reiterated his position that the U.S. will not attack Iran before the midterm elections, despite ongoing discussions with Iranian officials. He emphasized that the blockade remains in place, with oil flowing through the Hormuz Strait in record numbers. While he claims Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon, the potential use of the MOAB remains one of the options being developed for the president.
