A high school water polo team in California is facing serious allegations of hazing after several players were accused of injuring teammates. The incident, involving Long Beach’s Wilson High School male water polo team, reportedly occurred at a hotel near San Jose last weekend. The scandal has sparked concern and prompted an investigation by the Long Beach Unified School District.

Coach Condemns Hazing Behavior

Coach Zac Polmanteer, in a later-leaked email to parents, described the incident as involving harmful and humiliating acts toward student athletes. He stated, “Multiple student athletes were subjected to humiliating and physically harmful acts. Some athletes sustained injuries from being physically struck by their teammates.” Polmanteer emphasized that the behavior was “shocking, unacceptable, and completely contrary to everything we stand for as a program.”

According to Polmanteer, he was not made aware of the incident until the team returned to Long Beach on Sunday. However, he mentioned that there were several noise complaints and curfew violations reported before they left. “Hazing is a cultural problem, even when only a handful of athletes directly participate,” he added, highlighting the broader implications of the incident.

Investigation Underway

The exact details of the injuries sustained by the students have not been disclosed, and the Long Beach Unified School District has confirmed that it is investigating the incident. While the school district has not released further information, the situation has raised significant concerns about the safety and well-being of student athletes.

The incident has also sparked a broader conversation about hazing in sports and the responsibilities of coaches and school officials in preventing such behavior. As the investigation continues, the team and school face the challenge of addressing the issue and ensuring that such incidents do not occur in the future.
