A tragic incident unfolded at a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, when a 34-year-old woman drove her Chevrolet pickup truck onto an active field, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to ten others. The incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. on Saturday at the Stryker Sports Complex, where a youth match was in progress.
Tragic Collision and Immediate Response
The black pickup, which had been parked near the fields, suddenly drove onto the pitch, striking children and adults. Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses confirmed two fatalities at the scene and multiple casualties transported to hospitals. The victims were identified as 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both from McPherson, Kansas. They were pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by bystanders and first responders.
Ten others suffered non-critical but traumatic injuries and were taken to Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Medical Center. An additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for unrelated medical complications, bringing the total transported to 11. Witnesses and community members rushed to help the injured before emergency personnel arrived, with police calling the outpouring of aid remarkable.
Driver’s Actions and Legal Status
The driver, who remains at the scene, was cooperative with investigators, held a valid driver’s license, and had no outstanding warrants. She is from Garden City, Kansas, and her two children were inside the truck at the time. A third child of hers was playing on a different field at the complex.
On Sunday, October 18, the Wichita Police Department announced that after interviewing more than 30 witnesses, including the two children inside the truck, and consulting with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, the woman was released pending the results of toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the vehicle. No charges have been filed.
Community Response and Ongoing Investigation
Police Chief Joe Sullivan expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, stating, “Our hearts are with the families of Adrian and Nicholas as they face an unimaginable loss. What should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together ended in tragedy.” An initial case review is expected to be presented to the district attorney early this week. Police are seeking additional photos or videos from anyone at the complex.
