A National Guardsman was shot and injured in Washington, D.C., while helping to break up a fight near the U.S. Capitol. The incident occurred on Sunday night in the Eastern Market neighborhood of Capitol Hill, according to D.C. police.
The guardsman, who was unidentified, was shot in the leg after exiting his vehicle on a sidewalk in the 400 block of 8th Street SE. He was one of several authorities who arrived to disperse a brawl. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll confirmed that the suspect, who had been involved in the fight, pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the officers.
Carroll explained that the suspect pointed the gun at the authorities after they ordered him to drop the weapon. In response, three National Guardsmen deployed firearms, resulting in both the suspect and the guardsman being struck. The suspect was shot in the abdomen, while the guardsman sustained a leg wound. Both individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment and are expected to survive, according to the police chief.
A nearby fire department provided aid to the injured before they were taken for hospital treatment. Carroll noted that there were no other threats to the community following the incident. While there are no additional suspects, investigators are seeking information from anyone who was present before the fight began or has any relevant details.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining public safety in the nation’s capital. As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the case.
